DESCRIPTION

Where the Future Came From is a collective research project on the integral role of feminism and women-run art activities throughout Chicago’s history, from the late-19th century to the present. The project included a symposium, the creation of a participatory-research space within an exhibition environment, the presentation of several related programs documented through a publication, and the development of an archive representing the history of women-run spaces in Chicago.

As the graduate research assistant on this project, I performed several duties, including performing fieldwork, documenting, reporting and presenting research findings. I also wrote Safe Spaces and Collectives: How Collectives Use Safe Spaces to Amplify Voices, an essay which is published in Where the Future Came From and can be found at Soberscove and Inga Books.

The exhibition was organized and curated by Meg Duguid, Director of Exhibitions for Columbia College Chicago’s Department of Exhibitions, Performance, and Student Spaces.

ZINE WORKSHOP

Willa Goettling and I co-lead Imagining a New Women's Liberation Movement One Zine at a Time

We invited established and first-time artists alike to participate in a feminist zine-making workshop at the Glass Curtain Gallery. Workshop participants came together to recreate the collaborative spirit of Chicago Women’s Graphics Collective, a feminist printmaking collective that created posters during the Women’s Liberation Movement of the 1970s, by making their own risograph prints. After the workshop, each participant will receive a risograph printed zine containing one piece from each workshop participant.
